Are you an FY1?

Would you like a buddy to provide some informal support?

Please read over some of the below information about what a buddy can offer you and if you're still keen you can sign up on the link at the bottom of the page.

Any questions not answered here or on our FAQs please contact us on info@fy1buddynetwork.co.uk.

When you sign up you tell us where you will be based for your FY1. We know that FY1s often rotate to different sites, but to make our matching process easier, we ask that you tell us where you will be primarily based for your time as an FY1. If your primary site isn't included please select your nearest and do let us know so we can correct our information.

We know that in some regions, these rotational sites may be further apart. If this is the case let us know where you are working first so we can allocate a buddy near you if possible. If you relocate we can match you with another buddy if you would like and/or you can keep in touch with your original buddy. This is up to you. If at any point you would like to be rematched, or an additional buddy, please email us. Of course there is the option for remote support also, and as we can't always guarantee where we'll have buddies available, we ask people to consider this as an option.

We also need your details - full name and email address so we can put you in touch with your buddy, and with a few other bits of information through the year.

Other things we'll ask you about:

  • Specific areas of support you might have
  • Specialty if you are looking for some specialty specific advice**
  • the level of buddy that you would prefer - would you prefer someone who is a near peer (such as FY2 or SHO) or a registrar or consultant or GP etc.

**Please note that this scheme is not intended primarily for career advice, if career advice is your main priority, we would recommend contacting the relevant royal college, or talking to your foundation programme director who may be able to offer advice about career mentoring locally.

Once you complete your sign up you should receive an automatic email from us. If you don't get this please check your junk/spam folder and get in touch, as your sign up may not have been processed. Also please be sure to add info@fy1buddynetwork.co.uk to your safe senders list.

We will then try and match you with a suitable buddy. This can take some time, particularly when we first launch whilst we're getting buddies signed up too. Within a couple of weeks we should be in touch with the details of your buddy or perhaps to ask you a few questions to try and better match you.

Please be patient, and keep checking your spam folder, as in the past some FY1s have lost out because of this.

When you are matched you will get an email with the name and email address of your buddy (or buddies - sometimes we match FY1s to 2 buddies), and you should get in touch with your buddy and look to arrange to meet face to face or virtually as circumstances allow. We also recommend that you share your mobile number with your buddy to allow you to better keep in touch.

If this all sounds good, then you can sign up below.

Any outstanding questions then have a look at our FAQs or contact us.
